Arizona - The State Board of Cosmetology
California - California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology inspects both schools and salons. Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education use to inspect schools before they were
eliminated, but now they are back and schools have now been notified by BPPE that
they will begin to start inspecting again.
Delaware - Division of professional regulation licenses school and DE Department of Education approves school and performs annual compliance visit.
Georgia - State Board of Cosmetology, which falls under the State Department of Public Health.
Idaho - In Idaho the inspections of both the schools and the licensed establishments are done by the State Board of Cosmetology and a certificate of compliance is issued to the establishment by the State Board. If they are not in compliance they are given 30 days to clean it up and come into compliance or be closed.
Kansas – Kansas State Board
Illinois - The Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation inspects both Schools and Salons
Indiana - Indiana Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners and the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.
Iowa - State Board of Cosmetology, which falls under the State Department of Public Health.
Maryland - Maryland State Board of Cosmetology inspects both Schools and Salons. Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) approves schools and regulates the policy and standards of operation.
Illinois - The Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation inspects both Schools and Salons
Indiana - Indiana Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners and the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.

Missouri - The State of Missouri will send a letter to any school that requests a letter regarding State Authorization. The Missouri State Board will send a letter to schools that says they are authorized to teach Post Secondary Education. The Cosmetology and Barber schools and Salons are regulated by the Missouri State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners. The only issue we have is that there are only 11 examiners for the entire state, which is not enough.
Nevada – State Board of Cosmetology
New Jersey - The NJ Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling does inspections on schools and salons
New Mexico - The State Board of Cosmetology inspects the cosmetology schools
New York - New York State Education Department Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision
North Carolina - North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners
North Dakota - North Dakota is inspected by the State Board
North Carolina - North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners
North Dakota - North Dakota is inspected by the State Board
Ohio - Ohio State Board of Cosmetology inspects both Schools and Salons
Oregon - Oregon Health Licensing Agency inspects the Safety and Sanitation, The Oregon Dept. of Education Collects from the Beauty Colleges $100, and pays the OHLA to inspect the Safety and Sanitation. The Oregon Dept. of Education inspects the curriculum, student files, etc.
Pennsylvania - PA State Board has inspectors to visit schools and salons.
Rhode Island - Rhode Island State Board
South Carolina - State Board of Cosmetology licenses and inspects schools (including post-secondary institutions).
South Dakota - Board of Cosmetology
Tennessee - The Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology
Utah - In Utah, our board is "advisory only", the board does no investigations or inspections. Investigations are done by our Dept. of Licensing, and all school inspections are done by the health department.
Wisconsin - Governed by and inspected by the Department of Regulation and Licensing
