Is online education offered for beauty & wellness?

The representatives for the following areas said YES:

  • Iowa
  • Maryland - We have a sections under reg. that pertains to offering a program in whole or in part by distance education.
  • Minnesota - For board-approved theory-based classes only. Practice-based classes must not be given online.
  • Ohio - It is very limited in the number of hours that can be used by the school.  No practical instruction and only 25% of a schools (state approved) theory curriculum there are other specific covenants that apply as well.
  • Texas - Nothing in the statute against online learning. The State allows it, however in the last year (2014) the advisory board has been debating on creating rules to limit the hours and content of theory allowed online.
  • Virginia - Online for theory is OK.
  • Wyoming - Instructor hours only, no more that 200 hours maybe acquired by means of board approved, distant learning program. These must be related to topics listed in the rules. All distance learning programs must be preapproved by the board.

  • Indiana - Indiana does not specify online education. The law says up to 10% of hours may be completed “off campus.” Although the intent is trade shows, educational events and salon visits, we interpret this to include online. New rules are in the works that will increase the hours to 20%.
